Alpaca/Merino sample

Last weekend I took my two Romney fleeces to the lovely Sharon at Jumbuck Carding, and to take a look at her drum carder. It’s a very impressive machine, and runs much quieter than I expected. The washed and fluffed fleece goes in one end, and comes out the other in a strip, like icecream out of a Snowcone machine! Very cool. Sharon gave me a sample of what was being processed – an alpaca/merino mix that had a lot of guard hairs in it, so had been rejected by the breeder. It’s softer than anything else I’ve tried to date, but having now spun and plied it, I can really see why the guard hairs are an issue – despite the softness, it’s quite scratchy against the skin. One day I’m gonna get me some of this fibre, but without the guard hairs obviously… 😉
